Harrison Barnes scored five of his 12 points in overtime and the top-seeded Tar Heels escaped a huge upset with a 73-65 victory over No. 13 seed Ohio on Friday night in the Midwest Regional semifinals.

Ohio, trying to become the first team seeded 13th or worse to make the regional finals since the NCAA tournament expanded in 1985, had a chance to convert a three-point play that would have given the Bobcats the lead with 25 seconds left in regulation. Walter Offutt missed from the line, however, and Ohio went 0 for 6 from the field in the first overtime of this year’s tournament.

“One free throw away,” Offutt said. “As a leader on this team, I take responsibility that I’ve got to hit that free throw. … It just feels terrible to kind of let my team down in that sort of way.”

Tyler Zeller finished with 20 points and a career-high 22 rebounds for North Carolina, which sorely missed injured point guard Kendall Marshall. The Tar Heels had three players with double-doubles for the first time in an NCAA tournament game: Reggie Bullock had 17 points and 10 boards, and John Henson had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman guard Stilman White was an impressive fill-in for Marshall, dishing out six assists without a single turnover and playing 32 minutes ? almost three times his previous high.

“We feel like we got away with one,” Zeller said. “Ohio played the better game, they hit a lot of shots. I think we just were able to make a lot of plays at the end that made us capable of pulling it out.”

Offutt led the Bobcats (29-8) with 26 points, including 18 from 3-point range, and Nick Kellogg added 14. But D.J. Cooper, who averaged 20 points in Ohio’s first two tournament games, finished with just 10 on 3-of-20 shooting.

“I’ve been getting those same shots all tournament,” Cooper said. “I’ve been making them, and tonight I just didn’t get the job done.”

North Carolina (32-5), which has won 11 straight in the regional semifinals, plays Kansas on Sunday afternoon for a trip to the Final Four. The Jayhawks beat North Carolina State 60-57.

“It means a heck of a lot,” coach Roy Williams said moments after his team escaped, “but we’ve got to play better than we did today.”

That’s for sure ? especially since the Tar Heels are unlikely to have Marshall, perhaps their most irreplaceable player and the steadying hand behind their fast-paced attack. The left-handed guard broke his right wrist Sunday when he was fouled on a drive against Creighton. He had surgery Monday to put a screw in the wrist and got his cast off Wednesday.

Though Marshall said the wrist is improving, he didn’t even dress Friday night, sitting on the bench in a suit.

“He still hasn’t done anything,” Williams said when asked about the prospects of Marshall returning Sunday. “But North Carolina’s going to play on Sunday. We’re happy about that.”

Barnes was dismal, flirting with a season low in scoring as he went 3 for 16 while missing from inside, outside and everywhere in between. But his teammates weren’t much better, turning the ball over a season-high 24 times and shooting just 40 percent, six percentage points below their average.

Worse, they could never get a handle on the smaller, quicker Bobcats.

“They don’t play like a 13 seed,” Henson said. “It was a great game.”

After trailing by as much as 15 in the first half, Ohio got hot from long range and gave the Tar Heels almost more than they could handle. Ohio, a 10?-point underdog, was 8 of 13 from 3-point range in the second half, with Offutt doing most of the damage. He made a 3-pointer to start a 14-5 run and hit two more during the stretch, which pulled the Bobcats to 42-41 with 10:23 to play.

After Zeller’s layup and a dunk by James Michael McAdoo, Cooper hit his only 3 of the game. Kellogg came right back with another to give Ohio its first lead, 47-46, with 8:28 to play, and the Ohio faithful ? plus all the new fans the Bobcats picked up ? went into a frenzy.

Bullock then drilled a 3 to give North Carolina a 63-61 lead with 39 seconds left, but Offutt ? who else? ? scored on an off-balance drive and drew a foul from White. Offutt’s foul shot was way left, the only free throw the Bobcats missed in eight attempts, and Zeller grabbed the rebound.

“It’s just like him to take responsibility for the loss because that’s who he is,” Bobcats coach John Groce said of his senior, a transfer from Ohio State by way of Wright State. “But the reality of it is, that doesn’t fall on him. There’s so many plays during the game that make up the game in a 45-minute game, and if anybody deserved to make that free throw, it’s him. It just didn’t go in.”

The Tar Heels worked the shot clock down to the very last seconds, but Barnes lost the ball and Offutt came up with it. He flipped the ball to Cooper, who raced to midcourt and launched a prayer. It caromed off the rim, sending the game into overtime.

“Awful proud of our guys for the way that they fought,” Groce said. “But as I told them in the locker room, there’s nothing I can say to them at this point that’s going to take away the sting of getting beat in that one. They’ve got a lot of pride and they believed all year that we could compete and beat anybody that we played. That was no different heading into tonight’s game.”

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? President Barack Obama is opening his pitch for faster work to lock down nuclear material that could be used by terrorists with an up-close look at the nuclear front lines along the heavily militarized border with volatile North Korea.

Obama arrived in Seoul on Sunday morning, local time, for three days of diplomacy. In the midst of an election year focused on economic concerns at home, Obama has designed a rare Asia visit that features time in just one country. He’ll use much of the time to keep pressure on North Korea to back off a planned rocket launch and return to disarmament talks.

The goal of the large gathering of world leaders is to secure nuclear material and prevent it from being smuggled to states or groups intent on mass destruction. Progress has been uneven since the ambitious goal of lockdown by 2014 was first set out by Obama at a similar session in Washington in 2010. No breakthroughs are expected now.

Right across the border but not participating: nuclear North Korea, labeled by the White House as “the odd man out.” It is brinksmanship with North Korea and Iran, another nation not invited to the summit, that has dominated much of the nuclear debate and that will cast an unquestionable shadow over talks in Seoul.

Obama has called nuclear terrorism the gravest threat the United States and the world may face. North Korea is a prime suspect in the proliferation of some nuclear know-how, along with missiles that could be used to deliver weapons of mass destruction. Iran is suspected in the arming of terrorists with non-nuclear weaponry, and the U.S. and other nations suspect Iran’s nuclear energy program could be converted to build a bomb.

Syria, Pakistan and other global trouble spots are also on the agenda for separate meetings with global leaders attending a progress-check summit of more than 50 nations on Obama’s goal of locking down nuclear material around the world by 2014.

Obama’s first business: a visit to the volatile Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea, a show of strength amid confusion and disappointment over the state of diplomacy with the nuclear-armed North.

The symbolic visit to the border separating the Korean peninsula will be the fourth by a U.S. president. Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush all visited the DMZ; other U.S. officials regularly go there.

The border zone is a Cold War anachronism, a legacy of the uncertain armistice that ended the Korean War nearly 60 years ago. Hundreds of thousands of troops stand ready on both sides of the border zone, which is littered with land mines and encased in razor wire. Obama officials said the goal is to thank U.S. and South Korean military members and show U.S. resolve from “the front line of democracy” on the peninsula.

The United States has more than 28,000 troops in South Korea.

North Korea plans to launch a satellite using a long-range rocket next month, which the U.S. and other powers say would violate a U.N. ban on nuclear and missile activity because the same technology could be used for long-range missiles. Taken by surprise, the U.S. warned that a deal to resume stalled food aid to the North could be jeopardized if North Korea goes ahead.

The U.S. considers the rocket launch practice for a ballistic missile test and a violation of North Korea’s international responsibilities. The planned launch appears to be part of a long pattern of steps forward, then back in U.S. dealings with North Korea, and plays into Republican claims that Obama is being played for the fool.

Campaign politics surrounding a sitting president typically subside when he is abroad, although Obama’s posture toward threats to America will be scrutinized by his rivals.

The timing comes as daily economic worries, not foreign ones, are driving the concerns of American voters. Yet the setting does give Obama a few days to hold forth on the world stage while, back home, Republican presidential candidates keep battling each other.

Halfway into the four-year effort to safeguard nuclear materials from terrorists, many nations have taken voluntary steps to corral material that could be used for terrorist weapons. But they have sidestepped larger questions about how to track all such material, measure compliance and enforce security.

The summit will bring together nuclear-armed nations, plus those with civilian nuclear energy plants and several seeking to build them. Several non-nuclear nations and international organizations, including the U.N. and the International Atomic Energy Agency, are attending.

Countries known or suspected to have nuclear weapons are the U.S., Russia, Britain, France, China, Israel, India, Pakistan and North Korea.

Scores of countries still have research reactors fueled by weapons-usable uranium, and medical devices that use radioactive materials that could be fashioned into a “dirty bomb” are scattered all over the world.

“Unfortunately, Congress decided they wanted their own timeline,” Obama said in Oklahoma. “Not the company, not the experts, but members of Congress who decided this might be a fun political issue decided to try to intervene and make it impossible for us to make an informed decision.”

Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., said Obama was attempting to spread misinformation and pointed out that the legislation putting a deadline on Obama’s decision included an exception for the Nebraska portion of the project.

Terry appeared with Senate Republicans at a press conference Thursday at which they argued that Obama’s actions were little more than a publicity stunt that wouldn’t help developer TransCanada Inc. build the pipeline any sooner.

Construction on the 485-mile line from Oklahoma to the Texas Gulf Coast is expected to begin in June, with completion scheduled for next year.

“It’s simply to, I think, deceive people into thinking he did something on the pipeline other than kill it,” Terry said.

He added that TransCanada was always going to build that portion of the pipeline and that Obama’s event Thursday was like “the rooster taking credit for the dawn.”

Republicans continue looking for a way to force approval of the overall pipeline, which would tap Canadian oil sands. Terry has encouraged GOP congressional leaders to play hardball.

He suggested including the pipeline in an expected short-term extension of federal highway programs. Such a move would put the Senate on the spot, because without the extension, those programs expire at the end of the month. Other Republicans have indicated a pipeline-free extension is more likely, however.

Obama’s two-day trip, highlighting his energy agenda, to Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and later in the swing state of Ohio reflected consumers’ uneasiness with high gas prices.

His latest announcement was immediately condemned by environmental groups, which said the president “has gone 180 degrees in the wrong direction in less than 180 days.”

Jane Kleeb of Bold Nebraska expressed disappointment.

“When you fast-track a project, you cut corners, and no one should cut corners when folks’ land and water is at risk,” Kleeb said.

It’s been more than a year in the making, but Kate Fulton can finally call her once burnt-out Tahunanui house, home again.

The city councillor and single mum to three children moved back into her Stansell Ave home this morning after it was almost totally destroyed in a pre-Christmas fire in 2010.

Family and friends joined the family early today for a dawn blessing carried out by council kaumatua Archdeacon Andy Joseph, helped by Cindy Batt, who called in the visitors to the ceremony, and taonga puoro artist Richard Nunns.

Ms Fulton, who 15 months ago cried outside with her children in the rain at the site of her home and its destroyed contents ? including a Christmas tree and the presents beneath it ? was this morning happy to be back despite a tough year.

They had moved into the Stansell Ave home the year before in what was to have been a fresh start after they fled the fatal forest fires in Victoria, Australia.

The house blaze, which the Fire Service said at the time was thought to have started in the basement, happened soon after Ms Fulton was elected to the council. She arrived home after a large combined effort to track her down while she was tramping with her children in Abel Tasman National Park.

“It’s taken much longer than I thought. It’s been a very hard year and I’m exhausted but today is very exciting. It’s like Christmas Day.”

The weatherboards have been replaced with modern Colorsteel, a new kitchen still looks out over the sea, recycled rimu floorboards are being proudly tended to, and a new deck is now protected by a cedar balustrade.

The community rallied to help the family in the aftermath. She is equally grateful for the help from friends and family during the salvage of household contents.

“A lot of stuff we just threw in the skip and half ended up in the garage of the house we rented afterwards. Everything was so smoke damaged ? 20 years of my life was in a big heap.”

Ms Fulton went to special lengths to save valuable books. It took her a year to find her passport and she has only just found her reading glasses, plus a pair of favourite shoes she campaigned in.

The rebuild has been made smoother than it might have been by the help of her builder, Simon Murray, and encouragement and advice from architect friends.

Mr Joseph said he was happy to help with blessings if people asked. “Transition is always nice, and it’s lovely that Kate’s family are here today.”

A gunman burst into a Jewish school in France on Monday, shooting dead a teacher, his two sons and another child in the third such deadly attack in a week by a man on a motorbike.

The children, aged three, six and 10, and the 30-year-old religious education teacher were mowed down as they arrived for class at the Ozar Hatorah school in the southwestern city of Toulouse, officials said.

President Nicolas Sarkozy said the attack was a “national tragedy” while Israel said it was “horrified” and urged France to quickly bring the perpetrator to justice.

The gunman shot the teacher outside the school in a quiet residential area of the city before one of his weapons jammed and he then entered the school grounds where he sprayed the area with bullets, a local prosecutor said.

“Shortly before eight o’clock (0700 GMT) a man on a powerful scooter or a motorbike dismounted and shot at everything he could see. At children as well as adults,” prosecutor Michel Valet said.

“This individual also chased some children into the school,” Valet said, adding that the school had around 200 pupils.

“I came to the school this morning for prayers,” said six-year-old Alexia. “Five minutes later we heard shots, and we were very afraid. We were gathered in a room and prayed together while we waited for our parents.”

Tearful parents gathered near the school after the shooting, discussing the possible links between the attack and last week’s shooting of three French soldiers.

The 10-year-old who died was the daughter of the school’s director, officials said.

A fifth pupil, a 17-year-old boy, was in critical condition and was being treated in hospital. A nearby Jewish primary school was evacuated after the attack, officials said.

The shooting came just days after two previous attacks in the region by a man on a motorbike who killed three soldiers.

There was no hard evidence of a link between the shootings, but Interior Minister Claude Gueant told AFP that there were “similarities” and police said the same calibre weapon was used in all three attacks.

The gunman initially used a 9-mm weapon but it jammed, so he switched to a .45-calibre gun as he went into the school, police said. A .45-calibre weapon was used in last week’s deadly shootings.

Paris anti-terrorist prosecutors said they have opened up three investigations into Monday’s attack.

Gueant ordered security to be tightened around all religious buildings in France, which has Europe’s largest Jewish community estimated at up to 700,000 people.

Sarkozy arrived in Toulouse late morning and said he wanted all schools in France to observe a minute’s silence on Tuesday to honour the victims.

Police in southwestern France launched a major manhunt last week after the killing of three paratroopers and the wounding of another in two separate, but connected incidents.

The perpetrator of both attacks fled on a motorbike.

A source close to the investigation into those attacks noted that those killed were of Arab or Caribbean origin.

The head of anti-racism organisation SOS Racisme, Dominique Sopo, said he was “horrified” by Monday’s school attack and noted the fact that all three shootings in the last week had targeted minorities.

“How not to think of the similarities between this killing and the murders of several soldiers last week in the southwest?” he said in a statement.

Between 50 and 60 police officers, including anti-terrorist specialists, were last week drafted in to the investigation of the soldiers’ deaths.

Senior military officials have ordered troops based in the region not to wear their uniforms outside barracks.

The first victim, a 30-year-old non-commissioned officer, was dressed in civilian clothes when he was shot dead in the street in Toulouse at point blank range on March 11.

The gunman escaped on a powerful motorbike or scooter.

On Thursday three more paratroopers, based this time in nearby Montauban, were shot while standing at a cash machine outside their barracks.

Two of Thursday’s victims — sappers from 17th Parachute Engineering Regiment (RGP) aged 26 and 24 — died on the spot. The third man, a 28-year-old from the same regiment was left in a critical condition with spinal injuries.

Witnesses saw a black-clad motorcyclist walk up to the men, who were in uniform but unarmed, and open fire at point blank range.

Witnesses described how the killer had time to turn over one of the wounded men who was trying to crawl away and fire three more shots into him before getting back on his scooter and making his escape.
